BOX OFFICE: Act Of Valor #1 With $25M Weekend, Good Deeds $16M, Wanderlust And Gone Blast

SATURDAY PM:Apppropriately enough for Oscars Sunday, it’s another up weekend for your eighth straight week this season.Common moviegoingis at $130M, the whopping +30% over a year ago.Clearly, Hollywood is ecstatic (though not within the prospect at sitting using the interminable Academy awards only to watch Harvey Weinstein gloat). Relativity’s R-ratedAct Of Valor has stayedNo. 1all weekend. It’s the the Bandito Brothers and sisters’ low-budget U.S. Navy fighting pressure taleusing actual Shuts. Relativity acquired the rights for the project last June for $13 million together with a $Thirty Dollars million in prints and advertising commitment -the finest money taken proper care of a finished film by getting a mystery cast in individuals days.Audiences gave it an ‘A’ CinemaScore, which Lionsgate’s romantic dramaGood Deeds also received. It seems sensible middling for Tyler Perry however people films where he doesn’t crossdress as Madea (and offendwith that stereotype) earn less. Nevertheless it’s right in line with Lionsgate anticipation and, besides, your financial allowance only agreed to be $16M. Yet anotherof author, director, producer Perry’ssoap operas specific to his core fans. But, seriously, is Tyler an amazing enough thesp tocarry a movie virtually by themselves? Not always.(Which I dread his approaching portrayal of Alex Mix.) Universal’s alleged comedyWanderlustbombed worse than expected: audiences gave it a typical’B-’ CinemaScore. The mix of Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd shown toxicto moviegoers. (FYI: this greenlight was the studio’s payback to Heroines director David Wain and mogul/producer Judd Apatow.) Also tanking is Summit’s not-so-thrilling Gone starring Amanda Seyfried which acquired basically a ‘C+’ CinemaScore. This really is really the most recent back to back of stinkers for the studio that's now part of Lionsgate.Bear in mind that children round the Colonial lost of college a couple of days ago so family holdovers Warner Bros’ Journey 2 and Disney’s The Important Thing Information On Arrietty held strong — no less than until Universal/Illumination’sDr. Suess toon The Lorax opens next weekend. May Be The Killing's Joel Kinnaman Your Brand-new RoboCop?

These deals-in-the-making tales always have a touch of suspicion since nothing in Hollywood is very sure nearly before the cameras roll, however the trade scoop the Killing's Joel Kinnaman might be the next RoboCop is simply too enticing. Joel Kinnaman who, you might request, and appropriately so? The Swedish-American actor's experienced a number of stateside film projects in some places (such as the recent Safe House and, briefly, Fincher's Girl using the Dragon Tattoo) however the closer I take a look at his work, the greater enticing this casting move becomes. Based on a Tweet by Variety's Shaun Sneider (also confirmed by Deadline and also the Hollywood Reporter), Kinnaman continues to be offered charge in Jose Padilha's reboot of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi pic. "Dealmaking is anticipated to start imminently," creates THR's Boris Package, whatever that actually means. Regardless, it is the first solid movement on the RoboCop lead since individuals Michael Fassbender fantasy gossips were waved away through the secretive Padilha. Kinnaman's no apparent option to headline a hollywood franchise reboot, but he's been dancing around the cusp of breakout status for any couple of years. The 32-year-old Kinnaman got his begin in Swedish film, most particularly using the lead in Daniel Espinosa's crime adaptation Fast Money (Also known as Snabba Cash), according to Jens Lapidus's novel the film has been launched within the U.S. on This summer 27 and will also be remade in British with Zac Efron, while a Kinnaman-starring follow up, Snabba Cash II, is placed for release in Sweden this year. Based on the Swedish website Ostran.se, Kinnaman used to be up for that leads both in Thor and Mad Max 4 (the roles visited Chris Hemsworth and Tom Sturdy, correspondingly), so Hollywood filmmakers happen to be searching at him to hold a significant studio release. But while he's clearly pretty easy around the eyes, it's his screen presence -- whether speaking British and Swedish -- that's impressed me probably the most. Have a look at Kinnaman below and weigh in: Can there be induce to be excited if this sounds like indeed your brand-new RoboCop? Canadian company has global goal

Kim McCraw and Luc Dery's Microscope has produced 'Monsieur Lazhar' and 'Incendies.'Small-but-happening Montreal production company Microscope is the poster child for the new wave of Quebecois cinema that's making waves far beyond the Canadian province's borders. The shingle has made it on to the Oscar foreign-language short-list two years in a row, for Denis Villeneuve's "Incendies" last year and with Philippe Falardeau's "Monsieur Lazhar" this year. Both films have sold around the world, as well as having nabbed numerous fest honors: Both, for example, won the audience award at the Rotterdam Film Festival. Since Luc Dery and Kim McCraw founded Microscope 10 years ago, the two have focused exclusively on smart, high-end pics designed to attract interest outside Canada. At the time, their approach couldn't have been more out of step with the Quebec film biz, which was mostly interested in churning out pics that clicked with local auds, but rarely made much of an impression anywhere else. "I don't think we've done one film so far that we thought would only interest the Canadian market," Dery says. "A lot of films (in Quebec) are made for the French-Canadian market, (but) we think, "?'Will it interest English Canada?' And if it does, it might interest other territories around the world." Villeneuve and Falardeau aren't the only Quebec filmmakers gaining international profile. Xavier Dolan, whose biggest-budget pic to date, "Laurence Anyways," is set to be delivered this spring, is also a rising star; and Jean-Marc Vallee is on roll following his 2011 Vanessa Paradis-starring Canada-France co-production "Cafe de Flore." "Incendies" and "Monsieur Lazhar" don't have much in common, except for their Oscar nominations: "Incendies" is a disturbing drama about family ties and sectarian conflict in an unnamed country in the Middle East; "Monsieur Lazhar" is a gentle piece about an Algerian refugee who takes over a grade-school class in Montreal after the previous teacher had committed suicide. Microscope's upcoming pics are just as diverse. They include another Middle East-set story "Inch'Allah," writer-director Anais Barbeau-Lavalette's look at a female French-Canadian doctor working on the West Bank. Shot in Jordan, like "Incendies" last year, it's currently in post. Meanwhile, lensing is set to begin within days on "Whitewash," Microscope's first English-language project. The feature debut from commercials helmer Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais, it's a snow-covered Coen brothers-esque black comedy about a guy who kills a man while driving his sidewalk snow plow and then hides out in the middle of nowhere. Dery, who's been a fixture on the Montreal film scene for much of the past two decades, says the Microscope filmmaking philosophy is pretty straightforward. "It's about stories we haven't seen or heard from people with original voices," Dery says. "And people who are nice. We like producing films and being happy doing it. So if we're having a shitty time with a difficult director, we don't want to do it." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
